Ikaros – Gröna Lund, Sweden

Just In time for the start of the new season, Gröna Lund in Stockholm, Sweden opened Europe’s first SKY JUMP named “IKAROS” to the public.

IKAROS take its name from the Greek mythology. The master craftsman Daedalus and his son Icarus attempted to escape imprisonment from Minos by constructing wings from feathers and wax. As he was flying towards his freedom, Icarus flew too close to the sun. The wax in his wings melted and he fell towards the ground. The top decoration of the new SKY JUMP therefore consists of a golden sun, because the closer you get to the sun, the closer you get to the fall.

Featuring a lattice structure with an eight-seater gondola on the two opposite sides of the tower (resulting in an instant capacity of 16 passengers), IKAROS is not a ride for the faint-hearted. Passengers are lifted to the top of the rides 95m tower before the gondola is tilting forward more than 90 degrees. They find themselves lying horizontally, facing the ground with their feet dangling high up and above the city of Stockholm, just secured by a high safety shoulder restraint. Then comes the drop….., plunging headfirst towards the capital’s waterfront at a phenomenal speed of 90 km/h. This makes IKAROS “definitely the scariest white-knuckle ride” in park’s 134 year history as stated by the park’s management.

“I have pretty much experienced all that there is in an amusement park,” says Johan Tidstrand, majority owner of Gröna Lund operator Parks & Resorts Scandinavia. “So I can honestly say that this is one of the most terrifying drop towers in the world. It’s also one of the most exhilarating. The feeling of adrenalin pumping through your system as you fall towards the ground, is hard to beat. I would really recommend everyone who has the courage to try IKAROS.

Also worth to be mentioned are the extremely comfortable seats and the at all times very smooth ride experience.

Intamin is proud of having contributed once again to the success of Gröna Lund and thanks the entire team for the outstanding cooperation.

95meters total height of attraction
90km/h free fall speed
